Long-term Goals - I achieve most of my long-term goals

Your long-term goals are the biggest, most ambitious goals you have for your career. These goals usually take a long time to complete.

Introduction

Macro goals are your long-term goals. A long-term goal refers to something you want to achieve in the future and requires both planning and time. These are goals that cannot be achieved in a week or a month. Long-term goals can take anywhere from 12 months to several years to achieve. Long-term goals are useful as they help keep our focus on the future and on what we can achieve.

Benefits of long-term goals

1. Long-term macro goals give us greater direction and purpose.

2. Gives us a better understanding of the bigger picture for our careers.

3. Creates a great feeling of accomplishment when we achieve long-term macro goals.

Skill example

One of my main goals for my career is to 1. start a tv show on the careers of different people. 2. This is one of my goals because I believe people get inspired when they see other people flourishing in their careers. 3. I will work to setup a careers tv show in the next six years. 4. The tv show will be online, so I will need a studio for when guests are in the studio but will be out in the field more of the time. 5. The TV show will need a presenter, cameraman and streamer. 6. I will put together a proposal and publish at least 5 shows so that potential sponsors can actually see what we are working to achieve.

Tandi’s story

Tandi is a 28-year-old graduate with a Diploma in Sales and Marketing. She is currently working as a sales representative for a large clothing manufacturer. Despite enjoying sales, Tandi is at a point where she wants to pursue her real passion. Tandi has always dreamed of working as an editor either full-time or freelance. She knows her qualification will not allow her direct access into such a position, so Tandi comes up with a plan.
While keeping her job, Tandi decides to take as many online courses, seminars, training workshops, and to watch as many tutorials as she can to increase her knowledge of the sector. She has also joined professional associations such as the Editors Guild of South Africa to network and learn from others. After months of sticking to this plan, Tandi meets Jacob. Jacob is the owner of a small editing company who is looking to recruit new editors for his team and is also a member of the professional association. Jacob invites Tandi to join his team, and she accepts. Tandi is overjoyed.
Her association with Jacob will be on a freelance basis, allowing her to do the work she loves while making a little extra cash and still allowing her to keep her day job. Tandi understands that this working relationship is still a new one, and she is still very new to the sector. A freelance basis allows her to be flexible and keep her current work while she gains experience. Tandi is incredibly happy as this is the start of achieving her long-term dream.
