Credibility is an art form, the legitimate way to show your strengths and authenticity. Credibility refers to the trust others place in your competence. To build your level of credibility, you must earn and build trust. Be genuine in everything you do or say. It is important to be consistent in everything you say and do. As the saying goes, “a person is only as good as their word”. Be respectful to everyone you meet and be accountable for your words and actions.

I built credibility in my career by staying consistent in my actions and becoming known as an honest and ethical person. I further built my credibility by getting skills and certificates to show others that I am a specialist in my sector. 

Bens’ story

Ben is a 28-year-old male who opened a small store in his neighbourhood at the start of 2020. Ben was doing well as people from the neighbourhood regularly visited his humble store. Customers felt Ben was a good, honest person who was running an honest business to take care of his family. However, this changed when the country was placed under lockdown in March of 2020 due to Covid-19. Given the circumstances.

Ben had decided he would increase his prices to make a quick profit. People were angry at first but continued to purchase from his store. As time went on and the reality of unemployment set in for many, people began challenging Ben on his high price hikes. Ben retaliated by being rude, disrespectful and aggressive to some of his most loyal customers. His customers left his store angry, hurt and humiliated by his behaviour. 

Everyone had assumed Ben was trustworthy, honest, reliable and consistent and fair in his trade, but after his recent actions, his clients no longer wanted to associate with a him. Word quickly spread through the neighbourhood, and many of the locals stopped supporting Ben’s business. Ben therefore lost his credibility because he was inconsistent in what people felt was fair.
